There Are No Short Cuts To The Film Business

First off, there is no business left.

Sorry to tell most of you that. It's the truth.

Secondly, there are no shortcuts to break in. For a few of you when you try you end up doing twice as much work. For the rest of you sociopaths, you couldn't care if you roll over people to get what you want.

Either way, just fucking work.

"Work" is such a concept to a lot of people who want to break into the business. "Working" to film people is typically schmoozing and then flaking out on people. Flakes are the worst. Too many people make false promises that aren't kept.
Want to make it? Work and keep your word.

It's really that simple.

Except here's the thing, a lot of people in this business would say that what I wrote here is corny.

Yep, it most certainly is. But more importantly, these people are thinking/saying this is dire straights.

Sad people who think they can make a shortcut.

As if a million people haven't tried what they tried.

I hung out with someone yesterday who wants to circumvent "the industry" by creating his own company to get money so he can make movies so he can sell.

Not a bad idea.

A lot of people have tried this. Not sure the percentage results of success rate. We only hear from the ones who succeeded.

I suggested if he goes this route, be an acquisitions house first. In others words, show people you have taste. That's how Blumhouse, Miramax and A24 started. Then they started making their own content.

Sure that will fall on deaf ears.

There are no shortcuts.
