A great smallish romantic movie directed by Preston Sturges
and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. A sweet screwball comedy which
is about a ale/beer heir who returns from his trip studying snakes and runs
into real reptiles in the form of Barbara Stanwyck and Charles Coburn who are
father/daughter grifters/card sharps. Unfortunately, she falls for the naïve
sweet guy but he discovers her past and she then goes in disguise as an English
woman to win back his love.
This movie could not be remade in any way, and I love that.
Because the scenario would have people rolling eyes up and down the aisle, this
is preserved, BECAUSE it’s so of its time. I love the smart way this movie is
written though. A scene where Stanwyck’s character Eve is attempting to prevent
her crooked Dad not to take advantage of the poor dumb sap. Instead of saying
it out loud, there are subtextual language that the audience understands. The
shit talking here would put rappers to shame. There is genuine fun and genuine
off-beat humor. A great mix of seriousness thrown in as well. And, for its
time, incredibly dirty innuendos.
Find this movie if you can. It's an opportunity to see Stanwyck evil but nice.
