"New Jack City" (1991) commentary only

Mario Van Peebles if fucking smart.
His commentary explained everything I hated about the inner city. He boiled it down to the basics of ghetto living. That the only way a low down person can get uptown, is simply to copy the ones they see that did it. Which, in this case, were the Italians.

When Blacks commit crimes, they are viewed as criminals. When Joe Kennedy was bootlegging, we now see him as a innovator. Both are corrupt. But the system is built to side with one over the other. For what reason?...who knows. Only that it creates people like Nino Brown. Give a Black man a suit and some money and it becomes thug life. Suppose a Kennedy, you gave them money and a suit and they became American royalty. Why is it that the Kennedy's keep dying off in odd ways? Because they hide it better.

Van Peebles is aware of all that. A smart commentary on the building blocks of crack, but the movie itself...it's a comic book come to life. You don't get any insight on the the filming of this movie (which is why I bought the fucking DVD). But there are great philosophies of how close the criminal and law elements function. Also, Van Peebles's personal viewpoint on what type of movies he decides to make and with whom. He's the real and original United Colors of Benetton. Strange that no one gives him that much credit.
