Not to be confused with "In & Out" the Kevin Kline gay teacher movie. Which is better.
Anyway, this movie is not good. It's really well made, but it is REALLY depressing. It's a Disney/Pixar joint and feeds every cliche of their brand. The growing up part of the movie could be an after school special. But we're saddled with a girl and her emotional pain at the cusp of puberty.
If the premise sounds familiar, it's because it is also the same theme as a 90's sitcom called "Herman's Head" Where you saw the guy's emotion played out with actors substituting for the moods. Also, Joy, in this movie looks like a young Marge Simpson.
There are just too many rules for this movie for kids to follow. And the jokes are generally for older people...Train Of Thought for instance seems more geared towards people like me to smile at. However, the story slowly chips away at why childhood at this age remains in the deep subconscious and that feelings are a light switch that you can subdue with...hugs? And that, the main character...is in for much much worse. I can only imagine when she gets to puberty, the entire brain will melt down. Common sense would say she barrels through it, but...don't be so sure the way Sadness overwhelms her life.
A weird entry into Pixar's fantastic track record.
