Cam Newton is the star quarterback for the Carolina Panthers
that is now playing for the Super Bowl. His recent statement is that
African-American QB like him is confusing to White people because they’ve never
seen anything like him. Sort of true. He’s a superstar. He would also be only
the second full Black QB to win the Super Bowl, if he wins. The other being
Doug Williams. I think Russell Wilson is part Black. But that is EXACTLY the
issue to which we’re so..divided. Why add to the conversation of being a
African-American QB? Oh well. If your asked a question, it’s nice of him to be
so honest.
When I first saw Cam play in college, I thought he was brash
and arrogant. He was really brought back to Earth in his first two years. That
Superman stuff is really garbage. The celebration piloting a shitty team,
really gets on your nerves. Well, fuck me, because if you win…I don’t care if
you slather yourself in mustard and hump the goal post, YOU DESERVE IT. Yes,
excessive celebration is irritating. However, if you’re the other team, this
should only mean you beat this fucker. If you can’t, he should be able to dance
a jig on your grave. You’re paid to be a professional, so the spoils go to the
victors.
If you think about the Panthers, I think you’d find it
difficult to name another player. To me, that’s pretty amazing. A team that
plays like…a unit. No one player should really pop except for the QB. Hell,
they get the blame, so I like the fact that QBs are starting to get more brash.
They should. The fucking position has GOT to be stressful. The other thing is
that the Panthers have only lost one game in the regular season. My God, that
is impressive beyond words. Let’s be real here. Winning a football game in the
NFL is an event. Tens of thousands of people have paid a LOT of money to watch
you play. Millions others watching at home. What else can you say allows that?
So the pressure is ten fold. To win 15 games is ridiculous. Especially playing
a position which has been dominated (in the past) by White guys. Does it mean
he should be a showboat? It’s never really been a norm yet, so in that sense,
hard to decide. But you probably should cut Newton some slack since there
really isn’t a precedence.
Okay, so now what happens if he does win? Is he on the
mountain with Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, or Tom Brady? Not quite. He
himself has admitted as representing the face of Black QBs, he does have a
responsibility. He’s essentially taken on this duty. And it doesn’t appear he
shies away from it. Which is why it seems we are where we are.
The experts do have Carolina Panthers winning this one. To
me the bigger story is that another team that’s never won a Super Bowl gets
crossed off the short list (yeah, my shitty Bengals still remain). I think
that’s a much bigger reason to celebrate.
