Yay!
I was contacted months ago that a person from rural Utah wanted to make movies...on film. So I suggested he buy himself a Bolex camera, which is a crank camera. And also a simple lens to start with. I suggested this for two reasons...the maintenance on a motorized camera is a pain. The gear is expensive and it escalates. Nothing in making films is cheap. Nor should it be.
So the guy contacted me after purchasing his camera and I walked him through the process of threading the film and what all the buttons do. I even sent him a welcome kit (well valued around $700...a zoom lens...that doesn't work great on my own camera, a changing tent, a roll of film, some camera reports and a promise that I will scan his film)..all for nothing but the cost of shipping. I really believe people need to shoot film!
So now he's up...and hopefully running.
This is a lot of fun. The excitement that someone has to make films outside the "easy way." He's made some digital shorts that he sent me, and I was surprised how well done they were. In my heart, I know he'll get it. An inherent talent. Also...he's in the middle of nowhere.
Also, a very strange thing...
he had a list of my films I made on Vimeo and through video chat, he pointed out many of the shots we'd done and I explained how each were done. Let me add...he wrote these questions on a piece of paper. Good move, kid. Felt like a celebrity again. Almost felt like a Q&A for a workshop.
So I hope to add new members to the film group and do more to keep film going. Hell, I'm already flattered the young buck chose me over Pornhub.
Speaking of which...
