The difference between horror and terror. Horror is if you look across the street and see your neighbor being murdered, terror is when the killer turns and looks at you.
I don't recall who said that. But it is appropriate for this movie.
Simply that you are watching a family unravel through horrible tragedy. Is it scary? Nope. It's funny in some parts. Boring in more parts. But it does have a tone to it that the longer you watch the more dream state you feel. In other words, boring as shit. The family dynamics actually were far more interesting than what actually transpires. And Jesus, whomever casted this movie simply has no clue about type. Neither of the children look remotely like either Gabriel Byrne or Toni Collette (super annoying).
There are a lot of people who so far have defended this movie in an elitist way. That most people won't understand. Yep, that's what you want your movie to do. If you look at the Rotten Tomatoes rating system, the critics loved it, the audience hated it. That chasm could only mean this fuckface director was attempting to annoy you. There is no explanation for anything in this movie. And is the saddest cop out. If you don't "get it" then you aren't bright enough. I contend...if you DO "get it" you may spook easily. So get some cojones.
Also, "different" in movie speak doesn't mean "annoying."
