The John Carpenter Lesson

Director John Carpenter was WAY before his time.
He made movies that are still relevant today..."They Live" should be re-shown to this society to see what a bloated greedy government would look like. This was during the Reagan era.

But that's not what the lesson is.

IF you happen to hear how Carpenter sounds today, he is a miserable old fuck...so you would think. First was his beef with the movie industry, then his open criticism of Rob Zombie (which we all understand).

Here's the lesson...if you aren't angry, you aren't alive. Indifference is death.

There are too many people in this world that are going to tell you that you should not care. "Hey, a guy cuts you off in traffic...meh...get over it." Or "your girlfriend dumped you...meh...get over it." Then they follow up with reasons not to get angry. We're creating a society where anger is suppressed, so we lash out in other ways. Bad ways. What I gather from Carpenter is this...to have an opinion means you care...and you have pride in your craft. For a VERY long time (and even to this day) his movies are revered as groundbreaking cinema. For most of us. The younger generation could care less. He becomes irrelevant due to time. Carpenter tells Zombie his remake of "Halloween" is suppose to be his own. Which, he DID make his own version. Then Carpenter bad mouths it. I think I know why...

Here's the deal.... IF you care deeply about what you do, you can't sit idly by while someone else does it...poorly (in your mind). Though it's different and gathers roughly the same result, you will never do things right in the minds of people who take their job that seriously. What do people tell you when you come to this realization..."care less about what you do." That is the stupidest thing ever said. And it's constantly used as advice not to give yourself an aneurysm.

When people get uppity about the way you do things...and you do the same thing...stop and realize that person really takes their job seriously and should be honored they even care enough to explain it. I'll try my best not to have any blow back of it. The harshest critic is always going to be ourselves. The worst critic is the person who stands on the sidelines with nothing better to do than to comment.
