Everyone thinks they can edit. The logic is...anyone can see the story once it's been shot. Nowadays an editor not only needs to put things together, they also have to dazzle with bullshit. It's part of the changing world.
I took to editing a friend's project recently. Something that was initially handed off to another person. The short is a music video...really. It is a complex movie that needs someone who sees the vision of the director. Unfortunately, a lot of times...director doesn't known until they see it. Especially new ones.
So, I "fixed" the edit to what I think the director wanted. A few tweaks BUT...it's obviously going to be met with criticism. Why? Because it's now a personality thing. Everyone has an opinion when it's shot and when it's edited. Sometime when writing if people would actually read in this fucking town. So...now everyone feels the right to prove why it didn't work even if it does. They aren't wrong. Only douchey about it. A lot isn't going to work. People still criticize "The Godfather." Not to say anything I've ever worked on came close to that quality, but most criticism comes from people who haven't made anything. Yep...armchair directors. I had one idiot tell me "I don't write anything but I'm great at seeing what's wrong with movie." Feel free to backhand this asshole if you ever hear that stupidity.
Anyway...editing. It's hard because you're dealing with things that CAN be changed now. The forcible hand. But it's also lonely because if you value the vision of others and miss...it's a heartbreaking fight. The coward runs for the hills when things don't go their way. This town is full of them.
