Yeah, I’ve been talking a lot lately about the Academy
Awards. Quite honestly, I never got into movies to dream of winning one. A lot
of people in this town have that dream of hoisting one up and thanking everyone
that helped them achieve…fame? It’s really rich people honoring other rich
people. In the big awards anyway. I knew a girl who won an Oscar for her
documentary that gave that speech about how her dress costs more than her
movie. I say this, because most of the time, the craftsman get glossed over.
Notice how fast Robert Richardson A.S.C. cinematographer rattles through his
thanking list and shuffles off. Then you have actors, take long drawn breaths
before their long winded speech about whomever. Most likely hoping to top the
evening with the Best Speech, along with that trophy in their hands. Those
speeches are also the most self-important. A time to get on a pedestal and
share for the world political thoughts. It’s not worth it. The rest of America
will resent you. For making millions…and telling others the suffering you
incurred on your way to the top. No one fucking cares. You’re wearing a dress
that costs more than their yearly salary. Remember that.
It dawned on me, the Oscars is all about actors. It has
nothing to do with us techies. Well, some techies like Ridley Scott &
Martin Scorsese get celebrated. For the most part, people go to see the actors.
I think a lot of people probably watch the reaction of the losers than the joy
of the winner. It’s very NASCAR like that. The reason I say that anything
“best” goes against what America is struggling to be. Which I don’t mind when
the hypocrites don’t even realize the hypocrisy. It’s up to the public to
really educate Hollywood. Or mock them. Watch what becomes of the only defense
Hollywood has then. Something like “we’re here and you’re there…that’s all you
need to know.” Yep, shallow and dumb and making speeches- Hollywood style.
To me, the Best Picture win has always been the biggest F.U.
to everyone. You are taught day in and day out that everyone is unique and that
everyone has a vision. Then a panel (apparently of mostly old White people)
says THIS…THIS is the Best Picture. Then it gets put into history as the
representation of that year. So…no one else realizes how silly that is? It
could be argued that the ones nominated…are from different genres. It could
then be argued, say last years’ “Birdman” is perfectly fine to represent a
dramatic Best Picture, but as Best Picture alone…GO fucking pound sand.
So I suppose the point is, for a town so Hell bent proud
about being diverse and equal, it certainly throws chum into a crab bucket and
watch the entertainment.
