As it's always been said...HDS has never been in a bad movie. The reason...he's always made it watchable.
When you think about actors, pretty boys comes to mind. With zero depth. HDS was born old and just continued with it. I recall the first time seeing him in "Alien" as a simple minded sidekick to Yaphett Kotto. Looking on it now, you realize the reason Ridley Scott had casted him was...he was 70's real guy. His face slumped with...gravity, you sensed his world was a slog. But he pressed on. He's played so many great characters all with charm. Molly Ringwald's father in "Pretty in Pink" made that movie a ton less silly than John Hughes writing (directed by Howard Deutch).
It's a travesty he's never won an Oscar. His natural style without being Sean Penn ostentatious should be recognized. Instead they constsntly honor hoo-hah Al Pacino or DeNiro. To me, he achieved the ultimate career of working without drawing that type of attention to himself. No drama for a brilliant actor.
