Gymnast Aly Raisman accused Larry Nassar, a former team doctor of the U.S. Women's Gymnastics team of sexual assault. To which Gaby Douglas, a teammate responded by telling her and other girls:
"It is our
responsibility as women to dress modestly and be classy," Douglas
said. "Dressing in a provocative/sexual way entices the wrong
crowd."
In other words, personal accountability. Dress for what you attract. A few things are off about the statement. First, it's a team doctor. Not like she dressed to be examined. Or in this case, most likely undressed. Second, this statement is about women in general. Though, a woman could dress in a potato sack and still get aggressively mashed on.
BUT, I do understand Douglas's point. Which is, stop looking like Instagram whores. McKayla Mauroney, another former gymnast, is what boners are made from...and she flaunts it:
The wrong crowd is me.
Look, dress like you want to make you feel desirable, but make sure you realize the flip side to that is sweaty unwashed animals ogling you. Douglas's statement isn't relevant in a team doctor aspect, so it's really dumb of her to say so. And may be jealousy that prompted that. But it is a note worth taking for the other women who are flashing themselves on social media.
