Trailer and poster are out for "Nina" a movie about Nina Simone.
I scanned this movie years ago. 2-perf 35mm negative. I think it looks great for 2-perf. The grain stays at bay, though they shot really at the base of the film.
Anyway the concern is that she doesn't look "black enough" or that Zoe is so fair skinned they had to essentially put her in blackface.
Anyone in movies knows it is a money thing. Zoe has more pull than any unknown Black actress now. You could throw out Viola Davis or...? But I think this probably is more telling of Hollywood's perception of who we want to see in movies.
Not to go off on a tangent, but unless you put your money into a movie and expect a return, you want to cover as many bases as possible. If that means getting people to come out for someone with a name, so be it. But I get some of the concern. What's the difference between say this and maybe someone completely White doing Blackface? Because then that would be a comedy. Hell you can hire a man for the role, how about that? The point is...investors want their money back. And to be honest, the fact that they are getting negative publicity means more free press for the filmmakers.
