There is a great lesson to be learned in this movie that succeeds where practically every dark comedy made today fais...it's that it has to be about...something.
I learned a lot watching this unfold that as silly of a wrapper this movie lives in, it is the importance of relationships and people that far outweighs the gimmick. I'm desperately attempting this in my new script.
"Game Night" is about the gen-Xers who grew up with lifelong pals who live for a night of games. I know couples who exist here. They're most Caucasian upper-middle class hipsters that think board game are cool. One night, someone ups the game into a murder-mystery which spirals into..well, it's just too ridiculous to mention here, but this is kind of a Shane Black movie without it being Shane Black and has a sweet center that you can't help but enjoy it. Yes, it is insane. Unbelievable even, but is crafted well and is a fun watch.
That said...if you do dissect this movie, be prepared to be disappointed. It makes zero sense. But the cameos are fun to watch. And Rachel McAdams is such a sweet good natured housewife (whom I know plenty) it's hard to shit on the logic. Watch it on a slow night. You won't be sorry (which is a boardgame).
