Ben Affleck's newest movie "Live By Night" is being blasted as a bloated vanity movie. Having not yet seen it, I think Affleck's worse efforts are some of ours' best.
It should reinforce William Goldman's edict...none of us knows what works. Seriously. Not one of us here in L.A. We think we know. But we don't. Which is no wonder why we use templates. Making movies outside the box is too risky. Which is to say I'm not suggesting you make formulaic moviesx just understand why the movie business does.
I guess there is a level.of ease that goes into knowing even the most talented people will slip. It's hard work to make a movie. Harder work to make a good one. To make one that is powerful...that's the Holy Grail. The magical combination that fulfills the inner core of human stories. Which is why I think movies are so personal and why a lot of people get up in arms when bad movies speak to masses.
Unfortunately, we are working at the spaghetti testing level. That is...throw it to a wall and see if it sticks. Chuck your best ideas to a wall and the ones that hold on...use. Hopefully, you get a meal out of it.
